LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Although the presidential candidate supported by both LIADA and our national organization did not do well in the national election, here on Long Island many of the candidates we supported won election, including many of the judges and state legislators.

However, it is true that winning even a local election frequently comes down to how much money is raised to run a campaign.  Fortunately, some local campaigns can be won with support from volunteers who are willing to ring doorbells and spend hours after work making telephone calls to potential voters.

Long Island is having a local election for village mayor on March 15, 2005 in the Village of North Hempstead.  The Village is one of the largest in the State, if not the largest.  The Village is governed by a Board of Trustees and the Mayor who are responsible for its development.

Over the past few years, several members of the Board of Trustees of the Village of North Hempstead have questioned the Mayor with regard to expenditures, but have not received a response from him.  It is time for responsible people to be voted onto the Board of Trustees and as Mayor.

LIADA is happy to support Wayne Hall for Mayor of the Village of North Hempstead and Lenora Long and Henry Conyers for Trustees of the Village.

The key to their winning is campaign support from citizens of LI who volunteer to make the telephone calls and ring people’s doorbells.  Please support Wayne Hall and his slate by volunteering between now and March 15, 2005.  Even one night of your time spent making telephone calls can help make a change in local politics.

Both NYS senators have good records on issues important to us.  While it is true that both Senator Schumer and Senator Clinton voted to give the President the power to go to war against Iraq, they have both stated that their vote was not meant to give the President the power to circumvent the United Nations or our European allies.  Both senators agree that they were persuaded, at least partially, by the administrations argument that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.  Now it is time to move beyond the falsehoods of the administration and for our Senators to be in the forefront of developing ideas to bring our troops home and still have an improvement in the lives of the people of Iraq.

UNREAL POLITICS

When a successful citizen gives his time to the community by being a county legislator, whether elected as a democrat or republican, he or she would naturally expect some thank you from the people he serves.

David Denenberg is a young successful Manhattan attorney who lives on Long Island and is also a Long Island County Legislator.

His reward has been several years of investigation regarding petition irregularities fostered by his opponents.  Those investigations were eventually dropped by the District Attorneys’ office.

Mr. Denenberg was forthright enough to meet with the members of our executive board to provide a detailed explanation of the events regarding these investigations.  After a review of the matter, our committee was convinced that Mr. Denenberg had not knowingly committed any wrongdoing.

This has not dampened his interest in being a county legislator. In fact, he recommended that the county legislature consider consolidating the water districts to help fight water pollution and reduce the cost of water services across the county.

LIADA continues to support Mr. Denenberg! CALL 516-292-8030 TO volunteer your time to campaign for Wayne Hall and his team.
